Before coming in for your alterations, be sure you understand the wedding’s dress code. Is it formal, semi-formal, cocktail, or beach attire? Each comes with different expectations, and your outfit should reflect that. Tailoring can help you meet these standards—for example, by adjusting the hemline of a gown for cocktail hour or ensuring a blazer fits just right for a formal event.

Before bringing your outfit to your tailor, be sure you’ve chosen your whole ensemble—including shoes, undergarments, and accessories. Shoes, in particular, are critical since they determine your hemline. Shapewear or structured undergarments can also impact how a garment fits, especially through the bodice or waist.

Bringing these items with you to your fitting helps your tailor make the most accurate adjustments possible.

#4 Alter It Sooner Rather Than Later

At Alterations Express, we complete most wedding guest alterations within four business days, with walk-in service available to all customers. We also offer express services for those in a pinch, including same-day, next-day, two-day, and three-day turnaround options. However, if you’re visiting another alteration or tailoring provider, keep in mind that they may require all customers to schedule appointments in advance. And, turnaround times will most certainly be longer than 4 days. Most tailors operate on a one- to two-week turnaround schedule, but expect this to take longer during peak wedding season as well.

That said, we recommend coming in for your initial fitting at least two weeks before the wedding. This gives our team plenty of time to perfect the fit —and make any necessary tailoring tweaks before the big event.

#5 Dry Cleaning, Steaming, and Garment Bags for Travel

After your alterations are complete, we recommend getting your garment professionally cleaned or steamed before the big day. And don’t forget to have it appropriately stored for travel. Always have your outfit professionally dry cleaned after alterations are finished.

A few days before the event, give everything a good steam to remove any lingering wrinkles. If you’re traveling to the wedding, use a quality garment bag to keep everything protected and wrinkle-free.

Bonus tip: Pack a mini sewing kit, stain remover pen, or double-sided fashion tape—just in case. A travel steamer will help eliminate any wrinkles that appear during travel, too. (We sell most of these items in all of our retail locations!)
